Sitges ReciclArt

Sitges ReciclArt

The next edition is scheduled for June-July 2025.

Sitges ReciclArt is an event dedicated to environmental awareness from the perspective of art, organized by Drap-Art and the Sitges Town Hall, in collaboration with the Barcelona Provincial Council. The goal is to raise visibility for the work of artists who develop concepts such as ecology and climate change in their artworks, prompting reflection on the role of art in social transformation towards a more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable world. Through the eyes of the artists, it highlights the large amount of waste generated by current consumption habits and encourages people to consume more responsibly and to use their creativity to achieve this. It proposes a creative and artistic outlet for materials that are discarded daily, using them as a resource, promoting creative recycling and more responsible consumption.

Its artistic interest lies in offering a visibility platform for the emerging sector of environmental artists. It promotes exchange between established artists in this field and emerging artists, contributing to their professionalization and fostering a new green cultural economy. It brings ecological art closer to the general public and new generations through workshops and other complementary activities.

Sitges ReciclArt was born in 2016 through the SAGA association of art galleries in Sitges, who wanted to dedicate that year’s Art Weekend to the art of recycling and invited Drap-Art to participate in organizing the event, which was named Sitges ReciclArt. Drap-Art, in turn, invited other entities to join the project: the Posidònia Green Festival, the Centre d’Estudis del Mar, and the Sitges Town Hall, Department of Culture.

An organizing committee was formed by representatives from all the involved entities, and the event was held at the Centre Cultural Miramar with a collective exhibition, creative recycling workshops, conferences, cinema, performances, and a fair of recycled art, design, and crafts. In 2017, SAGA decided to continue with the Art Weekend under a different theme but not with ReciclArt. Instead, it became part of the artAmore Sitges project.

The 2018 and 2019 editions were also held at the Centre Cultural Miramar, with exhibitions, workshops, and community art interventions.

In 2020, Sitges ReciclArt reached its fifth edition. Due to COVID-19, it was rescheduled to November-December, relocated to Can Falç de Mar, and had a reduced format, only featuring the exhibition. In 2021, it repeated the same dates, location, and format.

In 2022, the Department of Culture of the Sitges Town Hall and Drap-Art decided that the seventh edition of Sitges ReciclArt would return to the spring-summer festival format, now as a Biennale that would be prepared in advance and would kick off in May-June 2023.
